Christmas
The traditional and time-honored event, Christmas, is distinguished and celebrated by the fervent crowd all over the world with dazzling fires, customary Yule log, exchanging bequests, melodious carols, fascinating feasts and vibrant church processions. However, the history and origin of Christmas date back to the early Mesopotamians. The mores and customs which are prominent and observed today have come from the ancient New Year celebrations of Mesopotamians.
They believed that their God, Marduk, would fight against the monster of commotion right at the onset of each winter. This striking celebration continued for 12 long days. Persian and Babylonian communities also used to spend their eventful days in festive mood during that finicky period. Sacaea was the name of their festival. During the celebration period, masters would become slaves and vice versa. Early Europeans were not far behind as well and were afraid of evil spirits and ghosts. All of the revelers used to celebrate to get a glimpse of the Sun as they were scared of long dark nights and short days. Primeval Greeks and Romans also had their very own versions of celebrations similar to that of Sacaea. Some legends opined that the celebrations of Christmas were actually invented to compete against the pagan celebrations of December. 25th December was a holy day for both Romans and Persians. To fight against the Romans and Persians, the Church had taken the charge of spreading the religion. To fulfill their purpose they successfully had taken the cheerfulness, luminosity and gifts from the Saturnalia festival and had brought them into their own form of celebrations. All of these are now the integral parts of any Christmas celebration. Even though the exact birth date of the Christ’s child was never been marked but the traditional celebrations had started since 98 AD.
