The Best of South Kolkata Durga Puja and Pandals, 2007

These are some of the most off-beat south kolkata pujas of 2007, this year, that we have chosen for your information. We are sure there are a lot more which might be even more interesting and appealing. However, this meterial is just of an indicative nature, which also caught the fancy of our reporter. Please click here to share this page with your friends. Happy Puja

Behala Natun Dal

"Go Eco" seems to be the mantra of Bahala Natun Dal, and they have reffered to the old belief, that once upon a time, Goddes Durga used to live in the forests. They presenting with a full forest of 10,000 Sq Ft to the visitors of the pandal, and the forests comprises varieties of plants, having antiseptic properties, like Ashoke, Pipul and Bel, have been planted, thus raising awareness. Temples of Goddess Durga and Goddess Kali has also been set up, in the abode of plants. They have also used eco-friendly meterials like lime stone and brick powder to create the pandal. The message is loud and clear: respect and worship nature. Our kuddos to them for embarking upon a mission to educate the mass on the importance of planting trees, and we hope that they will carry on heir mission in many years to come.

Suruchi Sangha

Suruchi Sangha has been the major crowd puller for the last few years, and have been putting many big puja organizers to shame. This year, to rule the hearts of the pandal hoppers, they have taken recourse to the state of Gujarat, and its cultures. The houss of Kutch district were the only houses that were not affected by the 2001 earthquake, and the puja highlights the architecture style of these huts and houses in their pandal. A taste of Gujarat's culture has also been brought alive by the multiple stalls selling artifacts from the state. If all these were not enough, the puja organizers has also built a dandiya stage, where visitors will be able to see dandiya dance every evening of the days of puja.

Barisha Club

The two award pullers, Sristi and Sahajatri, have joined hands under the banner of Barisha club, and expectations of pandal hoppers and puja lovers have sky rocketed. And may we say, that it is poised to deliver even more that what is expected of them! For the first time in the history of Durga puja in Kolkata, we will be witnessing a complete pandal, alsong with the Deity's Idol, in Ceramics!

The architectural style, decorations, figures, all date back to the Bengali culture. We do not want to reveal more, as this puja becomes a must visit for all!

Vivekananda Sporting Club, Haridevpur

"Go Natural" seems to be the mantra of VSC, Haridevpur. This year, they have dvised everything from the humble tal pata, and everything means a kaleidescope of the full path of civilization, from the primitive man, to the modern man, through the path of knowledge. No artificial colors have been used either, and everything have been devises from powdered, cut, or whole tal leaves.

Badamtal Ashar Sangha

This is one puja famous for pleasantly surprising its visitors every time. Be it a fisherman's village, or a fortress, it never misses to deliver its innovativeness with art. This year, it is on a heavenly mission, to create a piece of heaven on earth. Its theme is Devlok, the abode of Gods. It promises that the whole area will radiate holiness and devotion. The main articles used are unique too, being tin containers and oil drums. We are all waiting!

Bosepukur Talbagan

Another biggie of the south, and relatively new comer, Bosepukur Talbagan has looked South this year to decorate its pandal. The highlight of the pandal is a 12 feet long Lord Shiva atop the pandal, and over 450 small idols of various deities inside the pandal. As we said, everything has a touch of South India in them.

Bosepukur Sitala Mandir

For Sitala mandir organizers, abstract seems to be the order of the day. They have devised a pandal, that looks different, and conveys different meanings, to its onlookrs, from different angles. So donot fight with your friend if he says that the pandal looks like a Dhal, while to you, it may resemble a trishul. Sounds of Shankha and Ghanta will also be reverberating inside the pandal dome. The inside boasts of intricate decorations, with a hajaar hut Durga on a lotus. The idol wil be slightly disproportionate too. Overall, food for senses!

Babubagan Sarbojanin

Babubagan is all set to become the chief crowd puller this year, with its Deep resolution! It has dared like no one before, to create a full marine world, in the midst of Dhakuria, Kolkata. Devi Durga will be a part of this water world, which will be comprising Dolphins, fishes, sea animals, tortoise, sharks and more, not to mention, about 5,000 liters of water, which would be recycled. The lighting would also be special, bringing the ocean life live. We are all prepared to see this puja hogging all the lime light!

Mudiali Club

Mudiali is more known for the wonderful ambiance it offers and the ethnic style of worship it follows. This year being no exception, it has chosen for an akchaler protima, in golden daker saaj. It has also promised to recreate a slice of Ajanta and Ellora in their pandal. Way to go!

Salimpur Palli

Not to be left behind, Salimpur palli os organizing a riot of handicraft at its pandal. There will be handicrafts from 9 districts of Bengal. Their Deity is being crafted from asingle piece of wood, which is a replica of an 18th century durga found in Bangladesh. They have also arranged for concealed lighting, to give a hue effect.
