Some heart-rending 24 years have glided by since the official
pronouncement of Elvis's intriguing and untimely 'death'. Yet, the music that rocked the
world with loads of emotions has never lost its life.
Neither has his popularity.
Each August, fans of all ages from all over the world make their
pilgrimage to Graceland, Memphis. The home estate of Elvis Aaron Presley.
It is one of the most visited homes in America today, now attracting over 600,000 visitors annually. It is also the most famous home in America after the White House. In 1991, Graceland Mansion was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
And it is here in the Meditation Garden where Elvis is laid to rest with
the rest of his family. The fans come and pay their hearty tribute to
their King.
Also, they want to be a part of the chain of memorable events that run throughout the Elvis week. The week leading up to the anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death, (August 16 1977).
The whole of Memphis is abuzz with the sights and sounds of Elvis. These include live shows, concerts, trivia contests, Elvis art exhibits and more, culminating in a candlelight vigil
at the gates of Graceland Mansion, the place where the King would live till the last. Also, Tupelo, the King’s birthplace, lives up with a host of Elvis events.
Not only in Memphis and Tupelo, more of such live shows, art exhibits and
entertainment programs are being staged across the United States and other
parts of the world by Elvis devotees to pay tribute to the king of their
hearts, specially on these occasions.
Following the death of Elvis a group of his fans initiated a movement to get his birthday declared as a national holiday. Though it did not materialize, his birthday and the day of death got eventually designated officially.
Today we are missing the
King. So is America, and the world of music. It's a great pain. At the
same time, it hits us with a grave warning...
Stay away from unwarranted use of drugs,
~ even if they're meant for medications.
Yes, sadly, it was an overdose of drugs that made us lose the King so abruptly.
And it has deprived the world of music lovers of an opportunity to see him
performing live and giving more of heart rending numbers. The
drugs he took as an escapade from the worries of his
celebrity-lifestyle eroded him steadily. Until it brought to an end his precious life.
It's no strange that many of his fans believe that King is still alive.
Each year reports of Elvis sighting pour in from different parts of North
America and even across the Atlantic.
